ING New York City Marathon®Sunday 4th November 2007St Columba’s Hospice are hoping to have a team for the 2007 ING New York City Marathon® and want you to be part of it. The race takes place on Sunday 5th November 2006 and we are looking for runners that want to raise vital funds to support the work that we do for many terminally ill patients and their families each year. If you would like to receive an information pack please e-mail running@stcolumbaschallenges.org.uk with your details (name, address and daytime contact number). Congratulations and many thanks to our mother and daughter team Moira and Pamela who successfully completed the New York City Marathon in 2006 and raised much needed funds for St Columba's Hospice. The New York City Marathon has inspired other events the world over. Indeed the London Marathon came about when former Olympic Champion Chris Brasher (who sadly died last year, aged 74) ran New York in 1979. Brasher vowed that London would also share in the exhilaration of staging a major race over the mythical marathon distance and this became reality in 1981. New York still has a magic that all the other marathons strive to live up to. The buzz starts when you arrive at the airport a few days before the race and doesn’t stop until you are homeward bound. New Yorkers get into the marathon spirit in the days leading up to the event. As you visit the famous sites of Manhattan you will feel like a star with strangers chatting to you - awestruck about the feat that you are undertaking in their great city. The classic 26.2 miles distance of the marathon is a huge achievement for everyone who accomplishes it – whether it be in 2½ hours or 8 hours. You will be able to apply for a guaranteed place in the marathon by pledging to raise a minimum amount of sponsorship. You can also enter through the open ballot for places, however these places are very limited for UK runners, so to avoid missing out on a place it is best to take a guaranteed charity place.
